Northwestern Educational Game Research Details

Note: Many points can change based on student and teacher interest

  • Students will participate in a study where they will playtest an educational game on unit conversions

Student Benefits

  • They get to see what research looks like (user experience research)

  • They will be compensated with a $20 gift card

  • They will learn concepts essential to unit conversions

  • More?! I'm happy to brainstorm any other ideas that you might think will benefit students!

Population

  • 10-30 students can participate in the study

  • Students should be between grades 4th-6th

  • Students should not be familiar how to convert volumetric units

Timing

  • Sessions will be 60-90min

  • Students will participate one at a time

  • The playtest can happen as often as you desire (e.g., x5/day or x5/week)

Location

  • The study must take place in person

  • The study can take place at school or at the child’s house

  • If the study is at home, a parent must be present in the house

  • If the study is at school, the study must take place in a public place (like a classroom) where there are people that can see what is happening

Student Consent

  • Students need to get parent consent for participating in the study

  • Students must give assent to participate during time of study

  • Students can choose to stop the study at any time they want

I’m a teacher, how much work will this be for me?

  • Teachers help pass on information to students and recruit interested students

  • They can also help set up a place and time to conduct the study if it is done at school

  • Teachers and parents do not participate in the study
